Virginia Beach City Public Schools Curriculum and K-5 Student Course Guide

--In a partnership with the classroom teachers and the Computer Resource Specialist the Library Media Specialist provides opportunities for learning enhanced by research skills and information retrieval. All lessons in the library are curriculum centered.

--All students in grades 1-5 have one period of art instruction per week with an art specialist. Art appreciation, art history, and the production of art objects are covered in the curriculum.

--Vocal music is taught one period per week to all students in grades K-5. Chorus is offered to fifth grade students two mornings a week.

-- Fifth grade students meet with the strings instructor for both small group instruction and instruction of the entire group. A rental system is available for instruments.

--Students have physical education daily. A Physical Education specialist and assistants deliver services to students. Classrooms and our gymnasium are used as needed during inclement weather.

--A computer lab consisting of 30 computers is in place for all students attending Hermitage Elementary School. The Computer Resource Specialist works with teachers, the Library Media Specialist and students in using technology to enhance and reinforce the curriculum. All classrooms at Hermitage have at least three computers and both computers have email accessibility for teachers and Internet capabilities for both students and teachers.

--Services are provided for students with learning, speech/ language, and developmentally delayed disabilities based on their IEP needs. Referrals are taken for all disabilities on an ongoing basis.
